First Time Getting a Professional Massage Here is What to Expect

First Time Getting a Professional Massage? Here’s What to Expect

Getting a professional massage can be therapeutic and mentally and physically beneficial. Here’s what to expect during your first massage.

Massage Preparation

Make sure you arrive at your scheduled service on time, as you don’t want to lose your appointment slot. When you arrive at your massage appointment there will be a few preparatory steps before your services begin.

  • First, you will fill out a form indicating any health concerns that you may have, or anything your massage therapist should be aware of. You will discuss with your massage therapist which areas of your body you’d like to be massaged, and any specifications you may have.
  • You will then be guided to the room where your massage will take place, and your massage therapist will step out to give you time to undress. You will want to undress whatever areas will be getting massaged in order to make it easier for the massage therapist to do their work, however, you may undress to whatever degree you feel comfortable. During the massage, any part of your body that your therapist is not working on will likely be covered with a sheet, both for warmth and modesty.

The Professional Massage Experience

During your massage, you will want to remain calm and relax your muscles as much as possible. If your muscles are tense it will be harder for your massage therapist to really dig deep and get out any knots or kinks. The lights will be low and soothing music will be playing to help you feel more at ease. Try to breathe deeply, and allow this to be a serene time for both your mind and body.

During your massage, you will likely feel some pressure, however, if at any point you feel intense pain make sure to communicate with your massage therapist and politely let them know that they may need to ease up a bit. Additionally, you can tell them which areas you hold the most tension that may need some extra work.

After the Massage

After your massage, you will be given time to dress before heading to the reception area to pay for your service. Your massage therapist will discuss any aftercare with you, and establish when you should return for your next massage. You will then be free to go and enjoy the benefits of your professional massage experience.

Keep in mind that it is common to be a bit sore after a massage, as massage brings fresh oxygen to muscles that may not have had much in a while. This soreness should pass after a couple of days.
